In the recent times due to excessive tea plantation activities the natural flora and fauna of Munnar has been disturbed that has led to survival of many species. There, a good number of protected areas have been developed in the region where endangered species could live in ease and comfort. Some of the popular protected areas in the region are Kurinjimala Sanctuary to the east, the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Manjampatti Valley and the Amaravati reserve forest of Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary to the north east, the Eravikulam National Park and Anamudi Shola National Park to the north, the Pampadum Shola National Park to the south and the proposed Palani Hills National Park to the east.
